Discover Kalaveras

If you’ve ever driven past 870 Arrow Hwy, Covina, CA 91722, United States, you’ve probably noticed the vibrant energy coming from Kalaveras. I stopped in on a busy Friday night after hearing a mix of glowing reviews and curious comments about their modern Mexican menu. From the moment I walked in, the music, colorful décor, and lively crowd made it clear this wasn’t just another taco spot-it felt like an experience.

I’ve spent years exploring Mexican restaurants across Southern California, and what sets this place apart is how it balances authenticity with contemporary flair. The menu is extensive without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find street tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and fajitas alongside seafood plates, birria specialties, and creative cocktails. On my first visit, I ordered the birria tacos with consommé and a side of elote. The tacos were crispy yet juicy, packed with slow-cooked beef that had clearly been simmered for hours. The dipping broth was rich and aromatic, layered with spices like cumin and dried chili-exactly the kind of depth you expect when proper cooking methods are used.

According to the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly value bold flavors and authentic global cuisine. That trend is evident here. The salsa flight alone reflects attention to detail-ranging from smoky chipotle to a sharp tomatillo blend. Each salsa complements different dishes, which shows thoughtful menu planning rather than random variety. When restaurants take time to craft complementary flavors, it elevates the entire dining experience.

One thing I appreciated was the staff’s knowledge of the menu. I asked about the preparation process for their carne asada, and our server explained that the steak is marinated before being grilled over high heat to seal in juices. That technique-high-heat searing followed by resting-aligns with culinary best practices recommended by chefs and food safety authorities like the USDA. The result? Tender slices with a slight char on the outside and a juicy interior.

The atmosphere plays a huge role here. It’s loud, colorful, and social. This isn’t the place for a quiet business meeting; it’s where you bring friends for birthday dinners or weekend celebrations. The décor leans heavily into Día de los Muertos themes, with vibrant skull art and neon accents. Some might find it overstimulating, but most guests seem to love the energetic vibe. Online reviews frequently mention the lively music and Instagram-worthy presentation of dishes, especially their oversized margaritas and micheladas.

Speaking of drinks, their bar menu deserves attention. Fresh lime juice, quality tequila, and balanced sweetness make a noticeable difference. The margarita I tried wasn’t syrupy or artificial tasting. Instead, it had that bright citrus edge and smooth finish you expect from properly measured ingredients. Moderation is always important, of course, but if you’re going to indulge, this is a solid place to do it.

From a value perspective, portion sizes are generous. Plates are designed for sharing, which works well if you’re dining family-style. Prices align with other sit-down Mexican restaurants in the Covina area. While it’s not the cheapest option around, the combination of portion size, ambiance, and flavor makes it competitive. Parking is convenient, and the location on Arrow Highway makes it accessible whether you’re local or visiting nearby neighborhoods.

It’s worth noting that during peak hours, wait times can stretch longer than expected. On my second visit, we waited about 30 minutes despite having a reservation. However, the staff handled the crowd professionally and kept things moving. Transparency about wait times and attentive service go a long way in building trust with diners.

Overall, the restaurant delivers a cohesive experience-flavorful food, a dynamic environment, and a menu that reflects both tradition and innovation. If you’re exploring Mexican cuisine in Covina and want something festive with solid execution behind the scenes, this spot stands out among local dining options.

  • Was hesitatant but gave it a try and was well worth the time! Went on a Wednesday evening and was sat immediately. Place was fresh with AC and clean. Plenty of seats; booth was comfy for 2. Tried the beef, birria and carnitas tacos. Asada fries and queso fundido. All were tasty and well seasoned. Food came out nice and hot. Salsa was flavorful but not too spicy. Prices for weekday happy hour, both food and drinks were great. We will be returning!

  • The food is amazing, and the portions and sides are great. The atmosphere is quite loud with tons of tvs playing music videos (the same one across the screens) but the vibe fits the restaurant and in spite of the music volume I had no issues hearing everyone at my table. My friend ordered a specific beer that ran out when they were pouring it so they had him order something else but still gave him what was left of his first choice (about half a glass), without charging him for it which I thought was a nice gesture. I absolutely plan on coming back and trying the rest of the menu!

  • Very eager to please staff who seem to take ownership of the place, as if they invested their entire fortune hoping to succeed. Well, the owner must feel fortunate to have these kinds of staff and I hope the business will grow well for everyone involved to be blessed too. The food was great, tasty, true to the Mexican flavor and tradition, a good amount of servings and the interior arrangement is refined. My wife and I got the lunch special and the price was good. Try this place. I can't say about the evening offerings but it has a bar.

  • Saw their Tuesday Taco $1.49 special and pretty decent Happy Hour menu so we went and tried it. The weekly specials looked interesting as well. $8 dollar special margaritas and various food specials are good. We had the normal tacos, Asada, barbacoa and pork belly. Also had their Quesabirria as well which is normal. Taco special was small but the condiments bar is amble of selections. The salsas were quite spicy! They don’t mess around with the margaritas! Loaded with Tequila and choice of mixes. Pretty tasty. Other items on the menu u looks good but a bit pricey.

  • This looks amazing. I love the decor. Food is bomb and customer service is on point. The fried plantains were incredible. I should have grabbed some to go. Came for lunch and going back for dinner.
